ABOUT THE EXHIBITION.

ULISBOA-MUNHAC _ nov 7 2024 > jan 12 2025

curated by Sofia Marçal (MUNHAC) and Katherine Sirois

On the basis of thisconceptual landscape, the exhibition focuses on the work of Salomé Nascimento who exploresthe fusion between natural elements and industrial materials such as recycledplastic. For this occasion, the artist integrates her pieces within the Museumof Natural Historys unit to simulate a scientific apparatus.

In dialogue with Nascimentos interventions in the space, the exhibition also presents selected works by three guest artists coming from different socio-cultural backgrounds, João Filipe Bugalho (Portugal, 1942), Paulina Dornfeldt (Germany, 1994) and Silvia Pallini (Italia, 1973). In addition, the exhibition also offers the public someexcerpts taken from Damasio and Næssbooks to trigger reflections on both the notions of Homeostasis and Ecology.

From the naturalist painting of João Filipe Bugalho, who dedicated his life to the conservation of nature, with various articles and lectures on Ecology; Passing through Paulina Dornfeld's installations, which, using earth and other natural elements, combine the aesthetic dimension of the works with a spiritual ritualistic function; To the work of Silvia Pallini, who considers her artistic process the interpretation of the organic movement of nature, a place of contemplation, flow and transformation.

Salomé Nascimento (b. Lisbon, Portugal 1970).

Lives and works between Alentejo and Lisbon. Artist-entrepreneur, whose professional activity unfolds in a multiplicity of transdisciplinary projects, crossing art, contemporary science and studies of consciousness. Her practice, difficult to synthesize in a style or theme, manifests itself in a mutant and permeable pluralism. An extension of her critical thinking and phenomenological experience, in an overlap between life and work that extends to participatory actions focusing the relational dimension.

Visual Arts and Design Course _ MFA Communication Design, Faculty of Fine Arts, ULisboa (1997). She attended the Venice Academy of Fine Arts on the Painting course and began her professional career in Italy. Studies, Curatorial Studies at the ‘School for Curatorial Studies, A+A’, Venice (2016). Master's Degree in Specialized Studies of Contemporary Art and Curatorship, Faculty of Arts, UL (2018). She develops several initiatives intended to disseminate contemporary artistic practice, its value and human development.

João Filipe Bugalho (b. Lisbon, Portugal 1942).

Lives and works in Lisbon. A Forestry Engineer from the Instituto Superior de Agronomia, he was there an invited Professor for 25 years.

Passionate about the countryside and natural elements, his professional life was dedicated to Ecology, nature conservation and the management of natural resources, occupying various public positions, namely in the Forestry Services of the Ministry of Agriculture. He coordinated several environmental education and research projects, organizing national and international congresses and seminars. He gave numerous lectures and published dozens of articles related to these areas. Painting has always been part of his life, with nature and landscapes being his chosen theme. He has held numerous individual and collective exhibitions and his work is included in several national and international collections.

Silvia Pallini (b. Pontedera, Italy 1973).

Lives and works between Florence and Pisa. Graduated in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. His body of work encompasses painting, photography and installation. She dedicates herself to pictorial research focused on the qualities of paper and natural materials such as charcoal, Indian ink and others. The artistic process consists of a meditative movement, a hypnotic melody with the flow of materials running over the white sheet – spreading across it, soaking the paper, impregnating it – while the “randomly” controlled compositions take on very textured shapes with different degrees of opacity and light density. She finds in natural landscapes the origin and synthesis of her research. It is in this perspective that everything begins and happens. Her work is an interpretation of the organic movement of nature and her place of possible existence.

Paulina Dornfeldt (b. Detmold, Germany 1994).

Lives and works in The Hague, Netherlands, where she continues her studies at the Royal Academy of Art, after obtaining a degree in Fashion Design in Germany. Multidisciplinary artist who explores with great passion the intersections between themes linked to nature, such as ecology, the anthropocene and spirituality. Her artistic practice is deeply influenced by her travels to remote places and the relationship she establishes with the surrounding natural environment. She collects natural materials, stones, soil and other elements, with which she creates emotional impressions of the landscape, while allowing other factors – wind, rain and sun – to influence the process. Her body of work includes painting, installation, photography and sculpture. Her work is a contemplative look at the changing world and our place in it.
